Derendorf belongs to the circle of districts that quickly developed after the Düsseldorf fortifications were razed in the early 19th century. Industrialisation, the railway and the powerful momentum of those years of rapid expansion accelerated development. Here you will find a sound, respectable residential area. Its proximity to the city centre makes Derendorf a sought-after residential district. Abandoned industrial buildings and railway sites wait to be converted into residential and office districts.
Green space was scarce in the residential areas that arose in the industrial period. The large, central Nordfriedhof cemetery therefore takes on something of the role of a park. The graves of many well-known Düsseldorf residents can be found here, including the final resting place of the author Rose Ausländer, who spent her final years in the city. However, Derendorf is a young district. An interesting young pub and bar scene plus excellent shopping facilities count among the district’s benefits.
