Hilden lies to the west of the city of Solingen and south-east of the state capital Düsseldorf, and with around 57,000 inhabitants is the fourth-largest town in the Mettmann administrative district. The town borders Erkrath to the north, Haan to the north-east, Solingen to the east and south-east, Langenfeld to the south and Düsseldorf to the west. The greater proportion of the town is situated on a river terrace that marks the transition from the Lower Rhine to the Bergisches Land region.
